Ethics and Conduct
Ethical practice is at the heart of all good therapy. FETT members are bound by a highly ethical and comprehensive code of conduct that is designed to protect the client and their privacy. The implication of this is that all information from clients is treated as private and confidential. The only exception to this rule would be in a case where a client tells the therapist that they are going to commit (or have committed) a serious crime, or to harm themselves. In such a case, the therapist may be obliged to take appropriate advice, although thankfully most therapists have never been in such a situation and never will be. The therapist may discuss a work situation with their supervisor, but in such a case the client's identity would remain totally secret from the supervisor.
Basic Rules
- FETT members shall abide by the FETT code of ethics and they shall hold the principle of 'do no harm' utmost in their counselling and/or hypnotherapy practice. They shall only work in their areas of competency and refer clients in a pleasant and helpful manner as and when is necessary.
- FETT members shall behave responsibly, ethically and benevolently in regards to all clients and potential clients and they shall do nothing to bring the society into disrepute and shall behave in a way that is beneficial to the society and their fellow members. They shall behave honestly, fairly and appropriately in all areas related to therapy.
- FETT members shall maintain adequate personal, professional and theoretical development and continue learning throughout their therapeutic careers. They shall maintain a supervision or peer supervision relationship and maintain suitable professional insurance at all times.
- FETT hypnotherapist members shall at all times maintain the highest clinical standards in terms of pre-conditioning, ego strengthening and avoidance of contra indicated practices in relation to a particular client. They shall do everything reasonable to avoid abreactions and always be prepared to use appropriate techniques to sooth a client and deal with any arising emotions in a gentle and soothing way. FETT hypnotherapist members shall not bring the society into disrepute by practicing non-educational 'stage hypnosis' nor shall they be associated with either 'past life regression' therapy in which clients are regressed into illusory past lives and misled to believe that these are real memories; however, they may use soundly-based past life regression techniques in which it is accepted that such 'memories' may be used for their symbolic meaning. Nor should they practice any techniques of regression therapy that may bring about false memories (particularly of 'repressed abuse') without first having carefully educated the client of the 'subconscious mind's' ample capability of creating fantasies that may be mistaken for real memories.
- The FETT management committee may terminate a member's membership if they conclude that it is necessary to do so to protect the society or the general public (or the therapist themselves) by this action.
