Training as a counsellor, psychotherapist or hypnotherapist can be a fascinating experience that leads to a very rewarding career, but potential trainees should be aware of the need to study with a suitable training provider rather than one of the many inappropriate 'colleges' who exploit students by providing them with a substandard training. A genuine training in counselling, psychotherapy or hypnotherapy gives students a comprehensive mix of practical and academic study covering all important areas of skill and knowledge and properly equips graduates to become skilled and ethical talking therapists.
Counselling and hypnotherapy are skilled ‘arts’ which have a solid basis in the science of psychology. Just as you would not believe someone who told you that they could turn you into a skilled carpenter in a handful of quick easy classroom or distance learning lessons you should not believe someone who tells you that you can become a skilled talking therapist in that timeframe or way. True talking therapists are professionals with a depth of understanding that can only be learned with dedication over several months in a process in which they absorb new understandings and develop themselves as individuals and therapists. There are a number of ways to become a counsellor, psychotherapist or hypnotherapist, some of these are listed below.
UCKP Psychotherapy Training
Holders of Bachelors Degrees and Graduate Diplomas who wish to train as a psychotherapist or a hypno-psychotherapist may study on a 4 year part time UCKP approved (University accredited) training that provides an excellent base both for private practice and employment. These trainings usually lead to Post Graduate Diplomas or Masters Degrees (see www.psychotherapy.org.uk).Training this way usually costs between £3000 and £5000 to professional Accredited level.
BABCP Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Training
Holders of Bachelors Degrees and Graduate Diplomas who wish to train as a Cognitive Therapist or Cognitive Behaviour Therapist may study on a one year full time or a 4 year part time BABCP approved (University or University accredited) training that provides an excellent base both for private practice and employment. These trainings usually lead to Post Graduate Diplomas or Masters Degrees. There are also a few three year University degrees that enable non-graduates to study applied CBT (see www.babcp.com). Training this way usually costs between £2000 and £6000 to professional Accredited level.
Undergraduate and Postgraduate Counselling Training at College
Counselling courses for non graduates are available in many local HE institutions in traditional counselling (Eclectic, Integrative or Person Centered). There is a clear process of development in this type of counselling training going through 1. a 30 hour counselling skills certificate taken over one College term, 2. a 120 hour plus Advanced Certificate (non-professional) in counselling taken over an academic year part time, 3. a 150-300 hour Diploma in Counselling taken over 1-2 years part time. Training may be academically or vocationally accredited. These courses offer a high ratio of classroom hours to cost and they often provide the easiest and most economical (sometimes providing 450 hours classroom tuition for around £2500) route to full BACP membership, however they are sometimes limited in breadth and training to professional level takes at least 3 and more commonly 4 years. Counselling courses for Bachelors Degree and Graduate Diploma holders are available in many HE institutions in traditional counselling (Eclectic, Integrative or Person Centered). These courses usually last one year full time or 2-6 years part time, lead to a Post Graduate Diploma or a Masters Degree and are often BACP accredited.
Training in Hypnotherapy with Professional Trainers
Most hypnotherapy trainers offer training to students without a degree. A genuine professional training is likely to cost between £1500 and £3000 (larger class sizes usually being more economical) and take between 1 and 3 years to reach Diploma level. These courses are usually accredited by professional associations (NCH, HS, HA, GHR etc) and may or may not be vocationally or academically accredited as well. Courses are usually based upon intensive 12 hour weekend study, but some trainers use flexible tutorial class training systems enabling students to study more at their own pace and with a much higher teacher-student educational contact ratio. This type of courses provides its graduates with all the skills to successfully set up in private practice as a hypnotherapist (to gain employment from service providers the graduate of pure hypnotherapy trainings will usually need to gain a counselling qualification as well).
Training in Psychotherapy & Counselling with Professional Trainers
There is a wide range of counselling and psychotherapy courses available from private professional trainers in the UK and other countries ranging from short courses to Advanced Diploma courses. Accreditation, course approval and external recognition on these courses may vary widely. Most private trainers focus on the potential student’s personal qualities rather than their academic qualifications and thus these are often ideal trainings for those coming back into education. Courses offered by private trainers tend to be more intensive than college courses and to cover a broader area of theory and skills in a shorter timeframe. These courses usually offer deep and sometimes alternative perspectives or techniques, they are usually based upon intensive 12 hour weekend study rather than traditional 3-5 hour weekly classes (some trainers use workshop or tutorial class training systems enabling students to study more at their own pace). Training is typically more intensive and slightly more expensive than traditional methods of counselling training, but qualifications may usually be gained (with diligence) more quickly and approaches learned may often be more fashionable and carry more kudos with potential clients for the therapist in private practice.

These are courses that equip graduates with suitable skill levels for the qualification presented. They range from courses recommended as ideal for the continuing professional development of the already qualified clinician to courses for those wishing to gain a foundation for further study in the talking therapies.
The FETT also recommends all eclectic, integrative and CBT courses that are accredited by CPCAB, BACP or BABCP. As well as the courses listed below prospective students should be aware that adequate and often highly economical training in eclectic, integrative or person centred counselling is available at many local colleges from introductory skills courses to 2-3 year Diploma level trainings. Assessment for FETT recommendation is a one off process and normally costs £85.00, but it is free A. in the case of courses of an exceptionally high standard and B. in the case of courses where any of the tutors are FETT members. Contact us for further info.

These courses provide a solid foundation in the basic skills, theory and methodology of therapy and a solid basis for further study. Similar (Advanced Certificate etc) level courses in Eclectic, Integrative and Person Centered counselling (usually offering around 100-150 hours tuition) are available at HE institutions in most regions, to find out about them contact your local HE College. The FETT is only open to qualified therapists and it does not have a membership category for trainees, but studying on the following courses and other similar ones provides the basis for further study that may make the graduate eligible to apply for FETT Associate or Licentiate membership.

4. Diploma Level Courses
These courses provide the student with a basic level of theoretical and practical competence to practice in counselling and/or hypnotherapy. Either alone or together with a foundation course these courses consist of at least 450 hours overall training including at least 110 hours or more practical tuition (or meeting equivalent standards). They are designed to enable the graduate to function as a talking therapist and cover all relevant areas of study. It is assumed that FETT Associate members who are graduates of courses at this level will go on to further study and CPD in order to increase their competency and understandings. Many HE institutions offer 1 and 2 year Diploma level courses (usually offering 150-300 hours tuition plus supervised practice) in Eclectic, Integrative and Person Centered counselling are available at HE institutions in most regions, to find out about them contact your local HE College. Graduates of these courses may be eligible to join the FETT at Associate level.
